Extract from Chapter 17
The naval bombardment subsided
and there was a roar of engines as RAF Hampdens passed overhead dropping smoke bombs.
“Standby kedge!” called the coxswain.
“Standby kedge!” repeated the bowman more clearly above the noise of the engines.
“Standby
kedge!” repeated the sternsheetman at the rear of the troop compartment in acknowledgment. Lieutenant Munton opened the inner doors of the landing craft just in front of him ready for the ramp lowering.
“Down kedge!” called
the coxswain.
“Down kedge!” called the bowman who watched the sternsheetman let it splash into the sea.
“Kedge gone!” he reported to the coxswain.
“Stand by to beach!” The bowman released
the tackle to let down the ramp just as they heard the sound of automatic weapons off to their right. Probably 4 Troop thought Robbie. Better them than us.
